The Opportunity
Netflix is looking for an attorney who will advise our internal and external partners on music business & legal affairs issues. This includes supporting our production partners in their negotiation of music deals (e.g., composer, artist, and songwriter deals, music director and producer deals, music clearances and licensing deals, worldwide public domain assessments, record company and music publishing waivers) in addition to handling certain music deals in-house.
The position is based in Seoul, South Korea.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Review, negotiate, and provide guidance on music contracts, including composer, performer, music director, or producer agreements, master use and synchronization license agreements, songwriter agreements, soundtrack release and distribution agreements, record company and music publishing waivers;
Advising external production companies and internal teams on music clearance, or clearing music directly as necessary for marketing/content usage. This may include researching 3rd party music ownership, obtaining quotes from labels/publishers, and negotiating music license contracts, including music library deals and blanket deals
Provide guidance on any music-related issues during our content production cycle, from development, budgeting, pre-production, production, post-production, delivery, and launch
Provide guidance on music rights to internal stakeholders (e.g., Marketing, Product, PR) and share music-related subject matter expertise with colleagues across Legal
Liaise with cross-functional teams on handling music licensing-out requests; and
Help find ways to scale the above to create more efficiency and give more transparency to downstream teams who need to access the relevant information
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 4 to 8 years of experience as an attorney, and membership in good standing in at least one jurisdiction
Minimum 2 years of experience in media, entertainment, or intellectual property law, either at a law firm or as in-house counsel within the media/entertainment industry. Candidates with direct experience in music production and licensing are highly preferred
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to coordinate across cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Practical and solution-oriented mindset, with adaptability to feedback and change, and curiosity to take on challenges outside of immediate expertise
Highly organized with strong attention to detail and effective time management across competing deadlines
Full professional fluency in both Korean and English, with excellent drafting and negotiation skills in both languages
Proficiency with Google Suite
