The following describes the job scope of the UPD Defect Engineer inclusive of the requirement during TD and ramp up of a new technology.
- Support for Technology Development and New Tool Selection: When introducing new process technologies or materials, the UPD Defect Engineer defines the defect inspection scheme secures necessary inspection capabilities including new tool selection. He or she predicts/validates potential defect modes in the early stages and suggests measures to minimize them such that new defect modes are not gating the success of technology development.
- Reliability Assurance: To enhance product reliability, the UPD Defect Engineer systematically analyzes and identify slow killer defects that cause reliability issue and takes preventive measures during the technology development as well as production ramp-up. This plays a key role in increasing customer confidence in the qualification and acceptance of our products as well as enhancing market competitiveness.
- Killer Defect Elimination and Yield Improvement: The UPD Defect Engineer analyzes various defects that occur during the semiconductor manufacturing process, identifies the causes and kill ratio of each defect mode, and work with unit process engineering to develop improvement measures towards enhancing product quality and improving production yield.
- Process Optimization: By identifying and improving process issues through defect analysis, the manufacturing process can be optimized. This establishes paths for cost reduction and increased efficiency during high volume manufacturing.
